Recent events in the US and the UK were the focus of a Discussion Group event held on Tuesday 16 June 2020. Eleven Party members from the Sheffield Federation took part in the event which was chaired by David Chinchen, our Candidate for the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner. A number of other members who were unable to attend the session submitted views by e-mail. There was broad concern that the rule of law should be respected and that evidence of racial discrimination should be the basis for debate and practical policy responses. It was felt that the current wide-ranging campaign to remove statues and restrict access to film and book content judged 'inappropriate' was the wrong approach. The key role for education to promote the study of history was noted and suggested as the right way to appreciate the complexity of characters and context, and to learn from our history to help create a fairer society. The summary of the discussion has been forwarded to the Conservative Policy Forum (CPF). If you would like to join the Sheffield CPF then please e-mail: [email protected]
